Set up SmartReferences in Typefi Orion Compass
Note
This article is for existing eXtyles customers migrating to Typefi Orion. For Cloud environments, your Typefi team configures SmartReferences on your behalf. For Workgroup and Desktop environments, your Local Administrator performs the steps in this article.
SmartReferences automatically corrects, links, and formats your citations and bibliographic references using Edifix with Crossref™ and PubMed® to:
- Analyse references and matches them against Crossref™ and PubMed® database
- Link references to their DOIs and PubMed IDs where available
- Apply your selected reference style
Gather requirements
Before SmartReferences configuration begins, you'll work with your Typefi team to confirm:
- Reference style requirements for each publication
- Sample content with representative references
Prerequisites
Workgroup and Desktop: Before configuration can begin, ensure your IT or local administrator has completed the following in Typefi Server:
- Installed a valid Typefi license (contains the installation ID required for SmartReferences)
- Configured a telemetry token (see Send telemetry data)
If the telemetry token is missing, you'll see an error when using SmartReferences in Typefi Orion for Word. If you don't have a telemetry token, contact your Solutions Consultant.
Set up your reference style
Your Typefi team:
- Analyses your journal's reference style requirements
- Selects the appropriate Edifix reference style for each publication
- Configures SmartReferences in Orion Compass
Note
For Workgroup and Desktop environments, a Local Administrator with the Manage Configuration privilege can select reference styles using the steps below.
To select or change a reference style:
- In the Orion Compass Global settings menu, select SmartReferences.
- Click the Reference Style dropdown.
- Select your desired Edifix reference style from the list.
- Click Save.
The selected style is applied when running SmartReferences from the Typefi Orion for Word ribbon.
Validation and training
After reference styles are selected, your Typefi team processes sample documents, reviews reference formatting and linking results with you, and confirms output meets your journal's requirements. Any adjustments are made before your editorial team is trained on using SmartReferences.
Next steps
After onboarding, your team can start using SmartReferences from the Typefi Orion for Word ribbon. For guidance on using SmartReferences, see the SmartReferences reference guide.
