Footnotes and endnotes

Footnotes

Note

Adobe InDesign CC 2018 and earlier does not support footnotes in tables.

The <footnote> element inserts a footnote into your document. A footnote is a piece of additional content at the bottom of a page. <footnote>s can be embedded anywhere in your document. To add a <footnote>, you must create a new paragraph (<p>) element inside the <footnote> element itself.

<footnote> has five attributes:

AttributeValueDescription
idstringThe unique ID of the footnote.
valuestringThe value of the footnote. This attribute is not used by Adobe InDesign.
statusadded
changed
deleted
Indicates the modification status of the footnote.
authorstringThe author of the tracked change.
dateTimeISO 8601 datetime stringThe date and time of the tracked change (2024-01-09T14:37:00Z).

A footnote:

xml
<p>
  The term "spam" in reference to bulk, unsolicited email is derived
  from the show's 1970 "Spam" sketch.
  <footnote>
    <p>There is an official Spam museum in Minnesota</p>
  </footnote>
  As the waitress recites the Spam-filled menu, a
  chorus of Viking patrons drown out all conversations with a
  song, repeating "Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam… Spammity Spam!
  Wonderful Spam!
  <footnote>
    <p>
      The classic Spam is made up of pork shoulder, ham, salt,
      water, sugar, potato starch, and sodium nitrate.
    </p>
  </footnote>
</p>

A footnote with tracked changes:

xml
<p>
  The Knights Who Say Ni demand a shrubbery.
  <footnote status="added" author="Terry Gilliam" dateTime="1975-04-05T09:00:00Z">
    <p> And one that looks nice. And not too expensive.</p>
  </footnote>
</p>

Note

Leading white space in footnote paragraphs (inserted by Microsoft Word) is automatically stripped.

Endnotes

The <endnote> element inserts an endnote into your document. An endnote is a piece of content at the end of a chunk of text. <endnote>s behave similarly to footnotes (<footnote>) and can be embedded anywhere in your document.

<endnote>s map to actual endnotes in Adobe InDesign CC 2018. For earlier InDesign versions,<endnote>s map to footnotes.

<endnote> has five attributes:

AttributeValueDescription
idstringThe unique ID of the endnote.
valuestringThe value of the endnote. This attribute is not used by Adobe InDesign.
statusadded
changed
deleted
Indicates the modification status of the endnote.
authorstringThe author of the tracked change.
dateTimeISO 8601 datetime stringThe date and time of the tracked change (2024-01-09T14:37:00Z).

An endnote:

xml
<endnote>
  <p>Tis but a scratch!</p>
</endnote>

An endnote with tracked changes:

xml
<endnote status="added" author="Terry Gilliam" dateTime="1975-04-05T09:00:00Z">
 <p>Tis but a scratch!</p>
</endnote>

Note

You must have a corresponding Endnote Typefi Section in your Adobe InDesign template, as <endnote>s are placed into Endnote Typefi Sections.
